子供の頃、たくさんのプラモデルをつくりました。箱に描かれた完成図はどれもカッコ良く魅力的で、その完成図を目指してつくることばかりに夢中になり、つくるということの意味を考えたことなどありませんでした。私達がなにかをつくるという行為を見つめ直すために行ったのは、壊すという行為でした。
このキットは実物の自動車を素材にしてつくられ、キット化するため解体・分解・切断し、たくさんの箱にたくさんの破片を詰め込みました。本来このようなキットは、箱のイメージのように出来上がるはずですが、このキットはそうではなく、説明書もなければ完成図もない、カケラのような素材となっています。
つくると・壊すという対極の行為の中に、なにか新しいものをつくるためのカケラが見つけられるのではないかと思っています。

Project: GARAGE KIT
Concept: This project aims to reexamine the meaning of production in this mass-consumption society.
To visualize, we dismantled an automobile―the symbol of industrial manufacturing―and repackaged it as a life-size model car.
The work consists of images reflected on numerous plastic model car boxes and the large box in the center. The 2,072 time-lapsed images, shot by a digital camera looking down on us as we took apart the car and replayed in reverse order, gives the impression that we are actually putting together a real-size model car.
In our contemporary society most things are mass-produced, only to be discarded to make room for the next consumption. Production and destruction exist side by side, making production possible only upon the act of destruction.
My hope is that these projects will provide an opportunity to consider the future of manufacturing and the very existence of products themselves.
